The largest collection agencies in Canada include Canada's three largest non-profit credit counseling agencies, companies--known as debt buyers--whose primary business is purchasing debt, and the traditional collection agency.
With about 39 percent of Canada's population, Ontario is the most populous province in the country. Accordingly, for the purposes of this article, we are using the definition of "collection agency" in the Ontario Collection and Debt Settlement Services Act. Under this statute the following entities must be registered as a collection agency under Ontario law:
traditional collection agencies
debt buyers
credit counseling agencies
firms providing debt settlement services
One could make the argument that not a single firm that's primary business is providing debt settlement services in Canada deserves to be on the list of the largest collection agencies operating in Canada.
The largest collection agencies operating in Canada come from three distinct groups (1) Canada's three largest non-profit credit counseling agencies, Toronto-based Credit Canada Debt Solutions, Consolidated Credit Counselling Services of Canada, and British Columbia-based Credit Counselling Society, (2) debt buyers--or companies whose primary business is buying debts owing to others, and (3) what most people think of as the traditional collection agency.
